CPT – Certified Phlebotomy Technician

Draws blood from patients or donors in hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes. Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures. Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure.

Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with disinfectant, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag. Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for subsequent processing. May prick finger to draw blood. May conduct interview, take vital signs, and draw and test blood samples to screen donors at blood bank.

Requirements:

Requirements include HS graduation (or equivalent); and

Path 1. Graduation from an AAPT-approved Phlebotomy Technician program ; or

Path 2. One year of full-time employment (2080 hrs) or equivalent part-time employment as a Phlebotomy Technician.

Note: A letter from the employer documenting working experience is required for candidates seeking Path 2 qualifications.

Only those approved by the administration will be allowed to continue with the Phlebotomy Technician and/or Instructor courses. Phlebotomy Instructors work in a variety of settings including hospitals, community colleges and medical corporations. Phlebotomy instructors facilitate the learning of industry standards using a blended approach to teaching to maximize adult learning concepts.

Requirements:

Must be a certified phlebotomist with an accredited certification agency, LPN or RN; and

1. A minimal of five years documented work experience in performing phlebotomy; and

2. A minimal of one year documented teaching experience; and

3. Submission of a detailed course outline and syllabus that must be approved by AAPT Advisory Board
